A quarterly journal – Hittalagida (meaning: the plant at the backyard) in the local vernacular language, Kannada (Karnataka, India) to document and disseminate farmers' indigenous knowledge system, traditional and indigenous institutions and biological diversity prevailing among rural communities so as to initiate a debate on sustainable agricultural development. Through this, complimenting the efforts of SRISTI and Honey Bee Network initiated by Prof. Anil Gupta, IIM, Ahemdabad.
Some of the topics covered in Hittalagida up to the end of 1999: Indigenous methods of plant protection, Indigenous seed treatment methods, Animal husbandry and ethno veterinary practices, Farmers Innovations - equipment’s and implements, Indigenous methods of controlling vertebrate and invertebrate pests, Biodiversity: a) Local seeds varieties b) Plant varieties Traditional/native crops, Dry and wetland farming technologies, Tribal agricultural systems - practices and customs, Indigenous meteorological prediction methods, Indigenous/ traditional “institutions” - such as rituals, customs, Proverbs, sacred grooves and community actions, Review of literature on indigenous and traditional agriculture, Native medicinal plants used in human health care, Indigenous food items, native fruits and vegetables, Bio-diversity contests, scouting of gross root innovations, Scientific analysis and validation of indigenous technologies, Indigenous crop production and organic farming methods, Native wisdom in every day farming, Profiles of organic farmers, Traditional tools and equipments etc.
